What are the reasons why transistors come in different packages?
Transistors are electronic devices used in many applications, such as in audio applications and more. There are different packages available in the market. Why is this so? What are the significance of each package?
Low power transistors, like the ones used in pre-amplifiers, are in a plastic package, since they operate in the milli-Watts range.
High power transistors, that operate in the Watts range, would have to dissipate the heat that that power generates. Having a metal case, and a large mounting surface, allows them to be mounted on a heat-sink to lower their operating temperature. Some medium power transistors have a flat plastic case with a metal tab. If the power dissipated is relatively low, there is no need for additional heat-sink, but if it is higher, then it will need to be mounted.
